Manchester Victoria - Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (Route Map)

A giant route map detailing the many routes that were part of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, with underneath the map, a bronze World War I memorial, in Manchester Victoria Railway Station.

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway was formed in 1847 and at the time was the third-largest railway system in the North of England, with the other two being 'Midland Railway' and 'London and North Eastern Railway'.

In 1922, it then became part of the 'London and North Western Railway', which then later became the 'London, Midland and Scottish Railway'.

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway built Manchester Victoria Railway Station in 1844, and at that time was one of the largest railway stations in the country and also one of the first stations to have the name 'Victoria' in the towns station name (others being London, Nottingham and Sheffield).

Today, Manchester Victoria now has 6 platforms (2 bay platforms, 4 through platforms), and is now owned by Network Rail, and is managed/maintained by Northern and Transport for Greater Manchester.

In 2017, the station was electrified with overhead live wires and now runs electric trains from this station to Liverpool, Bolton, Preston and Blackpool. In the future, services to Wigan North Western (via Bolton and Westhoughton) and Stalybridge (via Ashton-under-Lyne) will also become electric train services.
