Idle Drifter
LMS Fowler 3500 gallon tender for removing acetylene sludge at Derby Works. undated but wagon repair date on left is June 1970
Acetylene gas, widely used in railway workshops for cutting and heating metal, was produced on site at Derby Works. The gas was created from the reaction of water with calcium carbide. The spent carbide, called carbide sludge, was white in appearance and was loaded in to old tenders like this one for disposal. Though not seen in this picture the top of the tank and coal space have almost certainly been removed. Two doors are fitted to each side and these would originally have had bar with a screwed thread running from the top of the tender to the doors allowing them to be wound upwards discharging the contents.
An enlarged picture of the wagon on the right is also in my photo stream with an explanation of the significance of the information on the data panel.
