girivalam (Tamil) is the circumambulation of a holy object, like a temple or here, the Arunachala hill, a symbol of Brahman, the Self, Shiva or whatever name one wants to use to describe the attribute-less supreme Being. The distance is about 15 km and it is recommended to go barefoot and slow, like a "pregnant queen". The direction is clockwise. At all times of the day and night one finds people performing this age old practice.
In the full moon night of January 8th. 2012 the streets became one human garland around the hill, as that night coincided with the birth anniversary of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the sage of Arunachala.
