last Supermoon in 2020 (published in Explore, May 9, 2020)
May 7 2020 morning marks the last supermoon in 2020.. The moon is 14% bigger and 30% brighter, and is somewhat like a rolling light ball. This image is a composite of multiple shots to show the tonality changes of the setting moon with the rising sun. To put the giant moon in perspective, the shots were composed by including a 85 ft tall box-shaped tower atop Mt Umunhum. Thanks to the rising sun, the ambient light injects mood in the atmosphere while deepening our connection to this planet. Taking these shots involves precise planning on location and timing. I scouted on the day before the fullmoon at POV, which is about 12 miles away, to gauge Nature effects (e.g. air flow on light fluctuations, wind blow on camera stability etc). All these combined effects put the planning and execution to extreme test in order to achieve sharp and meaningful shots.
Have been chasing four straight supermoons, and this concludes the supermoon journey in 2020. It’s a phenomenal experience.
