Clathrus columnatus, also known as Column Stinkhorn
Clathrus columnatus, also known as Column Stinkhorn is found in Africa, Australasia, and America. It has a widespread distribution and is often found in woody areas since it is saprobic and uses extracellular digestion to obtain nutrients from dead and decaying organic matter, like wood. This fungus has had reports of poisoning people and animals, but is still listed as edible. The odor of this fungus is so strong and attracts insects who help disperse its spores. I found this while walking along in Forest C behind UNCW. The bright re color is quite eye catching.
