Apollo and Daphne
.
Shot at the HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON
.
According to the ancient Greek myth, Apollo mocked Eros, who decided to take some revenge on the God of music, poetry and the arts, so he shot him with the golden arrow of passionate love, while he shot the nymph Daphne with the arrow of hate.
Apollo pursued Daphne who ran away from him. When he finally reached her, she begged her father Peneus to have the Earth take her in so as to escape the embrace of the passionate God. She was so turned to a gorgeous plant, taking root in the ground, the plant Laurel. Apollo was heartbroken but swore to hold her forever, wear her on his head, hence the poets and artists were crowned with laurel leaves, φύλλα Δάφνης.
Apollo rendered her evergreen, her leaves never decaying.
This is a copy of the famous sculpture by the Italian sculptor Bernini. Daphne is turning into the laurel tree, as Apollo is touching her.
.
It is also one of the statues decorating the gorgeous HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON palace on sl.
