The Kadıköy to Moda heritage tram line 20 was opened in 2003 and in part followed the original tram 20 route which ceased in the 1960s. The new line was intended to stimulate business in the area. It was built as a mostly single-track circuit, operated in a clockwise direction. To operate it a number of trams were purchased from the former East German cities of Jena and Schöneiche. A workshop and car shed in Damgar Sokak, Kadıköy were constructed to maintain and overhaul the trams.

All the trams were two-axle but had three or four side windows. Three cars (numbered 201 – 203) were acquired for the opening of the line in 2003 and four more (numbered 204 to 207) in 2006.

Cars 201 and 203 were four window cars built by the Deutsche Reichsbahn railway works in Schöneweide, Berlin. They were previously Jena car 138 and Schöneiche–Rüdersdorf car 75. Car 201 was built in 1973 and 203 in 1975.

Car 202 was a three-window car built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik of Gotha and was a Gotha T57, previously Jena car 102 built in 1958.

Cars 204 to 207 were also of the three-window Gotha T57 type previously Jena cars 104, 110, 112 and 115, but not necessarily in that order. They were built in 1960, 1961, 1958 and 1959 respectively and the last three had been acquired from the Görlitz system in 1992.These cars were given overall advertisements and as a consequence did not always display their car numbers.
