Neighborhood Christmas display humor. I’ve been photographing this display ongoing now, since it was installed by a neighbor. Being a short distance from our property edge makes for an excellent target for my camera gear, day and night. Like many people who have neighbors I am vigilant to the comings and going’s of all sorts of events especially during these Covid days. To my surprise with the recent holidays and festivals, our fine neighbors across the way, celebrate and share by creating beautiful displays. This display is mainly a night spectacle with the extravagant lighting and candy canes and Gnomes. In the daytime it can go unnoticed. One morning, I noticed that the Gnomes were down and instantly thought that vandals had destroyed it. Many thoughts race through my mind as to what will happen to fix it. Was the creator angry. Will they remove it for fear of it happening again. I went about my day. That night it was up again. I thought, that’s great. Screw those vandals. Hurray for them standing up to them. The next morning they were down again and I thought , the war is on. Who would do such a thing? I started to suspect various neighbors and certain kids. Should I video the scene and confront the artist with evidence. No, I can’t get involved. Just help if asked, I said to myself. This has been going on for days now and I can’t believe this would happen where we live. Maybe it’s something else. Just the other night right before putting my head to pillow, I heard a huge crash noise. I went outside to investigate and sure enough somebody had crashed their car right next to the display, luckily, cutting the power and totaling their car not the display. Fire department, ambulance and CHP responded and dealt with the incident. In the morning Gnomes were down but the scene was spared. That night the display was on again and Gnomes were up. I said to myself, I need to rethink what’s going on for sanity sake. Maybe the artist puts the Gnomes up at night and down to sleep during the day. That’s it. Not paying to close attention, I always miss the artist doing it. I went a few more day thinking this and never seeing the artist do this. No more vandal thoughts, thankfully. It finally occurred to me the real goings on and realized I was born in an era where inflatable Gnomes never existed. Merry Christmas to all and even you vandals and crazy drivers.
