Strobilidum caudatum

Phylum: Ciliophora

Class: Spirotrichea

Order: Oligotrichida

Family: Strombidiidae

Genus: strombidium

Species: S. caudatum

Strombidium (originally Strombidion) is a genus of almost exclusively marine planktonic ciliates in the order Oligotrichida , which includes about 30 species . Like other ciliates, they are single - celled eukaryotes (protists) that move with the help of cilia. In Strombidium , as in the other Oligotrichida, however, these cilia on the cell body are either greatly reduced (to "bristles" ) or have been lost completely. Only the cilia around the mouth opening form large and conspicuous structures called membranelles , which also serve for movement.
