Pleuronema crassum

Phylum: Ciliophora

Class: Oligohymenophorea

Order: Pleuronematida

Family: Pleuronematidae

Genus: Pleuronema

Species: P.crassum

Pleuronematidae range in size from small (<80 µm) to large (>200 µm). Their shape is ovoid. They are usually free-swimming. Their somatic ciliation is holotrichous (i.e. homogeneous). They have long, stiff caudal cilia or setae. They have somatic extrusomes in the form of prominent rod-shaped mucocysts . Their oral region is a shallow groove, occupying much of the ventral surface, dominated by paroral cilia, present as a stiff velum and distinctly coiling around the subequatorial cytostome . The oral polykinetid 2 is usually in the form of two distinct segments or derived from two segments – a long, linear anterior segment with no more than two zigzag kinetosome rows and a posterior segment, usually “V”-shaped. Their macronucleus is globular to ellipsoid.
