venice: the horses of saint mark (explored)

The Horses of Saint Mark are four bronze horse statues, housed inside St Mark's Basilica in Venice, which were looted from Constantinople (now called Istanbul) in 1204 and positioned on the outside of the basilica. They were returned to Venice in 1815 following Napoleon removing them to Paris in 1797. They were subsequently removed due to air pollution and are on display inside the basilica and replaced with replica copies outside. Opinions vary as to whether they were initially produced in the 4th century BC or 3rd century AD.

The collars on the horses necks were apparently added in 1204 after the heads were removed for transportation from Constantinople to Venice.
