Timber Rattlesnake
Definitely one of the coolest animals I've ever had the privilege of photographing. Jim Sullivan and I drove 4 hours to southern Illinois to walk Snake Road. Appropriately named, this trail is 2 miles long and runs between huge limestone bluffs and a large wetland area. I got 5 new snake species for myself and 1 new salamander species! It was awesome, and this timber rattler took the cake. I could hear its rattle from 50 yards away. It let us get extremely close and, when it decided it was ready to leave, we stepped aside and let it pass. Snake Road, Trail of Tears State Forest, Illinois
