New Companions

Quwemina looked up. A tall tree covered in knife marks was towering over her. Her light blonde hair was wavy, long and smooth; her light blue eyes watched the sky carefully, scanning and observing what she could. It was almost dark so she knew she had to head home to her Adma, Aka, and younger brother Dero. She saw movement in the bushes, almost like a small dragon's tail had peeped out. She came nearer the bushes. "Who's there? Come out." Her dagger was ready in hand when a medium sized dragon came out. "Oh. It's you."

"Who else should it be? Did you bring my fish?"

"Yeah, I brought them." She threw the fish toward the dragon. "Are you going to come to the village tonight?"

"Fine. One, two, three, four, five… Twelve. You owe me five more."

"Just because you saved Dero from drowning and I didn't doesn't mean I owe you fish every night, Jillit."

"Really, Mina? You were the one who watched but didn't help at all."

"Oh shut up."

"No. I'm older than you by centuries so I don't have to listen to a youngling like you."

"Fine." Mina growled. Dero came running up. His light brown, shaggy hair was wild; his one eye was missing, but that will be explained later. His remaining eye was a bright gold with green specks, his face was an unhealthy pale that looked like sea foam on the waves.

"Mina, Aka needs you. Adma's really sick." He ran back toward the village, his slender, tall frame was odd and unnatural for an elf boy of thirteen. He ran quickly, his sister close behind and Jillit flew above them. Cerien the town blacksmith bent over the pale figure that was in the bed. His hair was shorter, and grey; his eyes were a dull blue as they looked down at his wife. "Aka, Mina's here." Cerien nodded, then motioned for all three of them to come closer.

"Yes, Aka?" They asked. Except Jillit, he stayed in a corner eating a fish he brought along.

"Come bid your Adma goodbye." Tears streamed down Mina's face, Dero obeyed silently, whispering thanks to his mother, and after saying a quick prayer he returned next to his sister. Mina looked down at her Adma, her face was pale now, her mother's dark blonde hair was white now, almost white enough to match her skin. She prayed, and bid her goodbye. A yell came from outside. Jillit ran out, then dropped his fish from his mouth.

"Gradonuls!" He shouted. Cerien gave Dero a sword and each a knapsack full of provisions.

"Get out of here. Now. I can't go with you, I have to stay and fight. Go!" The three ran into the woods, Dero looked back for just a moment. Denraz was standing in their hut's doorway. He looked back once more. Cerien dropped to Denraz's feet, dead. They ran faster than ever now.

Daeran, Gesfae, Taol, Hellian, Kan, Lero, Andrin, and Ryian trekked slowly on. They were tired after almost two months of traveling. Dero saw their dragons, then ran to Mina. "Travelers coming down the road and heading this way."

"Go ahead and see more. Jillit and I am going to hide." Dero rolled his eyes.

"Typical, selfish Quwemina." He muttered. He shapeshifted into a hawk, then flew off.

"Kan! Kan! Kan! Kan! Kan! Kan! Ka-"

"Soot! Shut up! What do you want?"

"HAWK!"

"Soot! Stop it! It can't hurt you and you know it." Kan yelled at the little red bird. The hawk circled, then landed on a branch. "Hello there, just to make Soot feel better, don't eat him!" The hawk laughed like a human. "Okay then… Creepy." Soot hid in Gesfae's beard, the middle of the beard were Soot hid shook. Again, a human like laugh came from the hawk.

"Quwemina! Jillit! You guys can come out now! It's Ryian!" Dero returned to his original form after landing on the ground.

"Stop calling me my full name!" Yelled Mina, she disliked her name a lot and hated to be called that. "Ryian! Where have you been?"

"Same old Quwemina? I've been in my homeland, why? What happened? Dero, you go back to your hawk shape and ride on my shoulder. Mina you've already got a dragon, so you're going to have to use that."

"I'm not any dragon, my name's Jillit of the Great Plains and partially a dwarf dragon."

"I'll do better walking, thank you." Dero shapeshifted into a large dragon from the dwarven mountains after flying high. He landed beside Mina.

"Get on." He growled. She climbed onto his dragon form's back.

"You could've made a saddle." She whined.

"Shut up. Or you're walking after I drop you off in the middle of nowhere!" Ryian laughed quietly to himself.

"You know these elves?" Asked Daeran. During most of the journey he had been unusually quiet, worrying about Vanheri.

"Know them? They raised me when my parents were fighting each other. They were both from different clans. We grew up together and I guess they're my family now."
