Garden of the Gods Milky Way
Went to Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest to get some Milky Way shots. A lot more light pollution than I would prefer but beggars can’t be choosers since I don’t have a ton of options for places to photograph it and considering this is only my second time photographing the Milky Way. Still lots to learn for me like lighting/photographing the foreground, what exposure length to minimize star trails, where my lens is sharpest near infinity (doesn’t help that this is a rental lens so I don’t really “know” it) and editing the MW.
Despite the light pollution here I love the potentials for foregrounds here. Perhaps a portrait style configuration would have been better so I could get more of the MW in the frame. Regardless, I love doing these and hope to do one or two more before MW season is over. If I can’t do that then star trails is what I’ll do. It was also nice not running across any copperheads this time or timber rattlesnakes rattling at my in the pitch dark like last time lol.
This was eight 20 second sky exposures at f/2.8, iso 3200 with a canon 5d mark iv and Tamron 15-30 stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker with five dark frames for NR. The foreground was one 15 second exposure at iso 1600 and lit by a litratorch.
