Fountain Flats Trading Post

Kamloops & Whisler, CANADÀ 2024

The Fountain Flats Trading Post site refers to a crucial historical area located near the modern community of Fountain, north of Lillooet, in British Columbia, close to the Fraser River.

Trade History: This area was a vital exchange hub in the 19th century. The trading post was not only a site for the fur trade (primarily run by the Hudson's Bay Company) but also served as a key supply point on the route into the interior of the province.

Indigenous Significance: The area is within the traditional territory of the St'at'imc Nation (Lillooet). Fountain was (and remains) a significant Indigenous community, and the trade at Fountain Flats was the intersection of Indigenous trade routes and colonial routes.

The Gold Rush: During the Fraser Gold Rush (late 1850s), the site became a crucial staging area and "supply depot" on the Old Cariboo Road, one of the main routes for miners heading to the northern goldfields.
