Audain Art Museum, Whisler.
Kamloops & Whisler, CANADÀ 2024
The Audain Art Museum (AAM) is a prominent cultural institution in Whistler, British Columbia, founded in 2016 through the philanthropic gift of collector Michael Audain.
Permanent Collection: It focuses exclusively on the art of British Columbia, offering a visual journey from the late 18th century to the present day.
Key Highlights: It is noted for housing one of the world's finest collections of historical and contemporary Northwest Coast Indigenous masks, the largest permanent display of paintings by Emily Carr, and works by renowned contemporary artists such as Jeff Wall.
Architecture: The building, designed by Patkau Architects, is a piece of art in its own right. Its minimalist structure, clad in dark metal, is raised above the ground (to protect it from flooding and snow) and blends respectfully with the surrounding forest, resembling a "lantern in the woods" with warm wooden accents.
Function: In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts unique temporary exhibitions from leading art institutions across Canada and around the world.
