Cattedrale di sant’Antonio Abate, Castelsardo.
SARDENYA 2024
The Concattedrale di Sant'Antonio Abate is the main Catholic place of worship in Castelsardo, a medieval town on the northern coast of Sardinia. The cathedral stands dramatically next to the Doria Castle, with its prominent stone bell tower dominating the seascape.
The current building, which blends Gothic, Catalan, and Renaissance elements, is the result of renovations carried out between the 16th and 18th centuries. Its bell tower, topped with a small dome decorated with colourful majolica tiles, was originally a watchtower. Inside, in the single nave, visitors can admire artworks, including the "Enthroned Madonna with Child" by the mysterious "Master of Castelsardo". The cathedral's crypts currently house the Diocesan Museum, where other sacred art treasures are preserved.
