Santa Teresa Gallura

SARDENYA 2024

Santa Teresa Gallura is a charming municipality located on the northernmost tip of Sardinia, Italy, directly facing the famous Strait of Bonifacio that separates it from Corsica. It is one of the main tourist hubs in the Gallura region.

History and Founding:

Ancient Origins: Although a relatively young town, its territory has ancient roots, as evidenced by the Lu Brandali Nuragic Complex and the ancient Roman granite quarries at Capo Testa.

Modern Founding: The town was officially founded in 1808 by order of King Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy, who named it in honor of his wife, Queen Maria Teresa of Austria-Este. The goal was to establish a settled and controlled center at the strategic port previously known as Longosardo.

Historical Symbol: Its most prominent symbol is the Longosardo Tower (Torre di Longosardo), an ancient coastal watchtower built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend the strait.

Natural Attractions and Tourism:

Gateway to Corsica: Its tourist port is vital, offering regular ferry connections to the Corsican town of Bonifacio.

Beaches and Coast: Its main asset is the coastal landscape, featuring white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The urban beach of Rena Bianca is the most famous and often receives the "Blue Flag" award.

Capo Testa: A few kilometers away, the Capo Testa peninsula is renowned for its stunning granite rock formations sculpted by the wind, its lighthouse, and the evocative Valle della Luna (Valley of the Moon).

Summer Life: During the summer, the town comes alive, with its historic center laid out in a grid plan radiating from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele I, which is bustling with shops, restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife.
