Torre del Portal, L' Alguer.
SARDENYA 2024
The Torre del Portal (or Torre di Porta Terra, originally known during the Catalan era as Porta Reial) is one of the most important symbols of Alghero because it represents the only surviving remnant of the city's land wall, which was largely dismantled in the 19th century.
Built around the 16th century during the Catalan-Aragonese domination, this imposing tower was the main entrance to the city from the inland of Sardinia. It was originally protected by a drawbridge that was closed every night, strictly regulating access to the fortified city. Inside, it once housed the stone coat of arms of the Crown of Aragon. Today, the Torre di Porta Terra functions as a cultural space and tourist information point, where visitors can take a multimedia journey through Alghero's history and enjoy panoramic views from the top terrace.
