European peacock - Aglais io
The peacock (Aglais io) is a medium-sized butterfly from the family Nymphalidae and the subfamily Aurelias (Nymphalinae).
The day peacock is one of the most colorful and best-known species of butterflies in Europe. The species is common in Europe in the temperate zones and is absent in the extreme north and south. The species can also be found in the temperate regions of Asia as far as Japan. The large distribution area can be explained, among other things, because the most important host plant, the nettle, is so common. The dagpauwoog is common in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The day peacock is not to be confused with other butterflies here because of its size, the orange-red wings and the characteristic eye spot on the top of each wing. The underside is well camouflaged by dark brown colors and dark stripes.
The peacock peacock has been well researched, so much is known about the butterfly's lifestyle, reproduction and development. It is one of the species that hibernates as an adult butterfly and can be found in homes during the winter.
