Iceland Day 1 - Livin' a Dream

Just came back from an amazing week in Iceland. I traveled along the southern part, with my girl and my parents. My mother in law was so kind to take care this week for our two children, so we were able to hike a lot. And according to my legs right now, we certainly did!

Traveling to Iceland in October is a bit of a risk, because the weather can get very rough, with cold tempetures and extreme wind gusts. But from a photographers point of view this dramatic weather can be just what you are hoping for, with many opportunities for great light and with autumn colors already present in the beautiful landscape that we all know from Iceland. Also the sun already stays pretty low for the whole day this time of the year, which means you can pretty much shoot all day, with light that never gets terribily harsh. Fortunately the weather turned out to be almost perfect this whole week, for which I am very thankful.

Of course familytime comes first for me at these kind of trips, but photography comes at a very strong second place! I did try to lower my expectations a little bit before the trip, but seeing all kinds of stunning photographs of this place, still kept them pretty high. Well, back in the Netherlands, I can tell that my expectations are exceeded, and by a lot. For me it is impossible to describe with words, what impact the stunning sceneries had on me. I've heard a lot about coming to beautiful places, and how you should try to not get overwelmed or overexcited, because it can influence the photography in a negative way. But from what I experienced now, there isn't that much you can do about it. You just are! When the light is good in such an enviroment, it does makes you want to stop everywhere and take shots.

But like I said, being here with family is more important then making the best shots possible. And I can understand that waiting for someone taking a photograph, especially if you're not in to photography, must be the most hard and boring thing to do! It all comes down to finding a balance between the two, and luckily I did get a lot of time for doing what I love the most. I am happy with the great time we had, the amazing things we experienced and also with the shots I took. And I can't wait to edit and show them. This last week in Iceland sometimes really felt like livin' a dream. And I think this shot of the Kerid Crater, the first location we visited, somehow represents a bit of this feeling.
