One Last Time (1)
After a long and distinguished railway career, and with one week to go until he hangs up his desk key, Driver Gordon Crawford takes a train over the Preston to Crewe stretch for one last time. GB Railfreight Class 92, 92014 doing the honours.
GC was rostered to work the Caledonian Sleeper Up Highlander (1M16) from Crewe rather than Preston, however with the service running over two hours late, the scheduled Preston to Crewe driver would've been out of hours and Gordon jumped on the 0559 Pendo from Crewe to Preston to work the service from there instead.
The significant delay was due to the Inverness portion being stuck at Kingussie for over three and a half hours after a ScotRail 170 unit was disabled by a deer strike, causing chaos on the single-track Highland Main Line.
1M16 had recovered to 'only' 138 Late as it passed Acton Bridge, but due to being caught up in traffic on the southern section of the WCML only made up a few more minutes between Cheshire and London, arriving into Euston (with Gordon still in the chair) 128 Late.
