Neil Bennett Back Marker

GB Railfreight's Beacon Rail-liveried Class 66, 66791 "Neil Bennett" brings up the rear of 6X76 21:37 Crewe Carriage Sidings to Kirkdale Carriage Sidings through a wintry Hartford.

The recent addition to the GB Railfreight fleet was imported from Sweden (where it ran as T66 404) in Summer 2019. After various UK mods at Progress Rail/EMD Longport and Covid-19 related delays, 66791 finally entered traffic with GB at the start of November 2020.

The loco is named after Neil Bennett as a (surprise) retirement gift for the former COO of Beacon Rail.

The move was to take pioneer new Merseyrail Stadler Class 777 Third Rail EMU, 777 001 to Merseyside from Arriva Train Care, Crewe, where it had been temporarily stored.

Despite it being the first-numbered unit, 001 actually finally made it to Kirkdale depot almost a year after the first unit to arrive there (003 on 15 January 2020).

001 originally arrived in to Crewe on 16 December having come through the Channel Tunnel the night previously along with 016 and 018. However, due to space restrictions at Kirkdale, 001 was left behind in Crewe that night and had to wait its turn to move to Merseyside.
