Leading the Procession

GB Railfreight Class 66, 66780 "The Cemex Express" rumbles through Hartford with 6G88 21:10 Dowlow Hindlow Quarry to Washwood Heath RMC.

For some reason there appeared to be a TSR (or some other issue) between Acton Bridge and Hartford as the southbound trains were all stopping/slowing through the area. This led to a bit of a bottleneck with 66780 being the first of three 66s to come through the station in succession.

This is a relatively new flow for GRS Group which comprises two trainloads a day of aggregates going from the Peak District to the West Midlands for use in the construction of HS2.

This working was routed via the Manchester to Crewe line, but was running on a different path via Newton-le-Willows, Warrington Bank Quay and the WCML - probably due to overnight engineering works and/or the Middlewich Branch no longer being deemed suitable for heavy trains.
