Hot Big End Bother

Not a great day out for Locomotive Services Limited's Standard Class 7 70000 "Britannia" after it failed at Carlisle and had to be taken off the return leg of Saphos Trains' "The Fellsman". Reportedly suffering an overheated big end bearing, the Brit required a tow back to base.

LSL's Class 20, 20107 (D8107) on standby / Thunderbird duties at Appleby for the Staycation Express was therefore despatched as 0Z20 to Carlisle.

It then hauled the stricken steamer on a late path (also 0Z20) back to Crewe DMD at a max speed of 50 mph due to Britannia's predicament.

Fortunately the move made better progress than the path suggested and the unusual combination passed through Hartford 138 Early - 10 minutes before the station lights went out.
