Crewe Diesel Open Day: Back On Just In Time

Locomotive Services Limited Class 47, 47501 / D1944 "Craftsman" prepares to leave on the rear of the final leg of the railtour that tied in with the open day at its namesake. The return to London Euston (1Z47) unusually started with the charter heading north out of Crewe station, to collect passengers from Chester before returning via Shropshire.

D1944 had originally led the first leg out of Euston, but after it failed with governor issues at Wembley, sister loco "Crewe Diesel Depot" ran round to work the train north to Crewe and then Chester. After the ECS recessed to Crewe, the fitters at Crewe Diesel fixed Craftsman under the watchful gaze of scores of people attending the Open Day. Craftsman was then attached to the rear of 1Z47 just in time to assist with the run back to London.

The Crewe Diesel Depot "All Change" charity open day was organised by Locomotive Services Limited and Virgin Trains West Coast. Photo taken on my iPhone "for the record".
