One Last Time
I've said this few times now, but with the Mk5's latest launch date on the Highlander less than a month away and Freightliner Class 90s doing the majority of the work on the Highlander, this could well be 92044's last ever working on a Sleeper train.
The conditions at Acton Bridge were atrocious, but in case this was 92044's last ever Sleeper run, it was one not to be missed whatever the weather. The original grey machine was hauling the Caledonian Sleeper Highlander south (1M16).
Class 92, 92 044 "Couperin" was built in 1995 as one of the seven engines allocated to European Passenger Services for Nightstar European sleeper operations. After that project was cancelled, it took until April 2015 for 044 to work a sleeper service after its current owners, GB Railfreight, won the Caledonian Sleeper traction contract.
Since then, the last remaining Triple Grey 92 on active on Network Rail metals has regularly provided support to the core sleeper fleet and has amassed over 165 Class 1 turns on the Caledonian Sleeper.
As it stands, 044 is not receiving the CAF mods which would enable it to operate the new Mk5 Sleeper stock.
Footnote: this was indeed 044's last ever working on a Class 1 Sleeper train. Glad I made the effort!
