The First of Many

Love them or loathe them, the Class 66s have been the mainstay of UK Railfreight traction for almost 20 years. With almost five hundred originally built for operating in the UK, the engine that started it all off - DB Cargo's Class 66, 66 001 - stands in Dollands Moor having been hired to Colas for test train duties on HS1.

Alongside 66001 is GBRf's Electro-Diesel Class 73/9s, 73 964 "Jeanette" and 73 962 "Dick Mabbutt" which had also been on-hire to Colas for test train duties. The 73/9s had brought the Infrastructure Monitoring train down to Dollands, but were not able to work it up HS1 for one of the periodic "high speed" runs, hence the use of the 66.

The test train stock itself can been seen in the shadows to the right of 66001 and just visible behind the pioneer Shed is SB Rail tamper DR 73916.
