Endangered Species

After many years working the trains, Class 90s are now an endangered species on the Caledonian Sleeper - and are running around in pairs for protection!

With the Mk5s rolled-out on the Lowlander services and their introduction expected in early June on the Highlander, the Freightliner Class 90s four year spell supporting the Caledonian Sleeper operations is nearing an end. Once the Mk5s are fully rolled-out, only Class 92s will be able to haul the full Load 16 rakes under the wires. The 90s will be thanked for their service and return to intermodal duties.

90046 and 90043 (DIT) - both hired-in by GB Railfreight - work 1S25 through Hartford. 90043 was being repositioned back to Edinburgh after undergoing an A Exam at Wembley. This was to ensure an extra engine was in place to work the additional southbound Highlander service from Edinburgh into Kings Cross during the Early May Bank Holiday diversions.
