Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

These small woodpeckers can be found on trees regularly this time of year. This female has been drinking sap from this maple tree for weeks, and has braved squirrel attacks, thievery from songbirds, and invasions by Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, which are much larger that she is. She was eating ants at the time this was taken, most of which have been removed in post.
