St George of the Greeks
Notice the holes on the upper part of the walls? those are actually from canons when the Ottoman Turkish army laid siege on Famagusta in 1571. The smaller holes at the bottom are also more recently from British colonialists who used the wall for target practice. Famagusta, once the richest city of the ancient world, It has now been under Turkish military occupation since 1974. In the medieval period the Venetians and French-built stunning Gothic cathedrals and buildings which still stand today, though some were converted into mosques. Unfortunately, there is very little effort in preserving these Gothic ruins. Before the Ottoman invasion, Famagusta had 365 churches and now there is 0.
