The abandoned Nicosia International Airport
It was so quiet I could hear my voice echo on the runway. During the entire time of my visit, me and my guide, a soldier of the UN, were being watched by the Turkish army. The abandoned Nicosia Airport saw the most brutal battles of the whole 1974 military conflict. Greek and Cypriot soldiers defended this important strategic point by the invading Turkish military who failed 3 times on different occasions to capture the airport, even having Turkey drop illegal napalm bombs on the soldiers and civilians. As the summer of 1974 was very hot and the surrounding areas are grassland, during the invasion when bullets would hit the ground of the runway it would create a spark thus flaming up the whole fielded areas surrounding the airport. which also led to the deaths of many soldiers. After the war, the United Nations then declared the airport as part of their buffer zone and since patrol the restricted area just like the rest of the buffer zone to ensure no one enters - Nicosia.
