Remote Sensing for detection of algal blooms

Remote sensing is extremely significant in the development of models useful for estimation of chlorophyll a concentrations and cyanobacteria. This is crucial in management of water resources. Scientist use satellite data to detect optical signature of constituents present in surface water. As compare to traditional monitoring programs, satellite remote sensing provides regular and synoptic coverage over large areas. Satellite image processing methods are important for broad group identification of algal blooms. With the help of remote sensing we can use the spectral characteristic of phycocyanin pigments to delineate HABs from non-toxic phytoplankton blooms. Synoptic coverage by satellite sensors provides wealth of information on spatial distribution of algae throughout a water body.
