Remote Sensing and Horticulture

Precision farming is a key word used by agriculture/horticulture scientists. This refer to precise crop assessment, growth observation, stress detection, soil moisture estimation, drought monitoring and many more. Remote sensing contribute a lot in precise agriculture. Along with GIS It contributes in spatial referencing, crop and climate monitoring, attribute mapping and decision support system. Processing of satellite imageries can be very helpful in production estimation, watershed development and many more. Crop classification method is used to classify horticulture crops from other bushes, shrubs and trees. Crop condition can be detected using NDVI. Area and production of crops like potato which grows in large areas in contiguous fields can be estimated with over 90% precision using remote sensing methods.
