The Rainbow Bridge…

Today, I unhooked your leash for the last time. I laid you on your bed in a cold doctor’s office and I told you about the first time that I remember seeing you. I told you about all the blessings you brought into my life and reminisced on some of our greatest adventures together, like that time we went and floated the Frio River together and neither one of us really knew how to swim. So I bought those incredibly ridiculous life jackets for both of us.. And you wore it like a champ. Or, all the times we took countless road trips crossing many states. You were my little copilot, my favorite travel buddy.

I made a promise to you, to protect you. I promised that whatever life brought to our door I would do my best to make sure your life was full of love and light. Darkness dared upon our door years ago when your heart disease appeared. We’ve made so many trips to so many specialists. But, darling you got so sick. This morning, the best light that I could offer you was helping you cross the rainbow bridge.

I will miss you, Annie. I will miss your wet little nose nudging me to wake up when you want a treat. I will miss your little barks when something excites you, the way you could devour a bag of treats in .5 minutes. There will never be a day I do not remember you. I love you so much. My life feels so surreal today and I am sure that in days to come it will be the same way.

My only hope is that today all kinds of animals greeted you today. That you were overwhelmed with love and happiness. That you could take in deep breaths and not feel pain. But, most of all I pray that wherever you are you know how deeply loved you are and how truly missed you will be.
