Orange-Tip, ' Anthocharis cardamines ' ( Pieridae ),

 

The Orange-tip is one of the most distinctive spring butterflies in the region and can often be seen flitting along flowery verges and woodland rides, The male is particularly striking, with bright orange tips on its white upper forewings, which can also be seen on its underwings, The tips of the female's forewings are black rather than orange, making it quite subdued in appearance, The underside of the hindwing in both sexes is with subtle greeish marbling,

A female Orange-tip could be mistaken for a Bath White, so note the Orange-tip paler appearance with fewer dark spots, and delicate flight,

 

Flies April - June in many habitats, including gardens, but favours damp grassland and woodland margins.

Foodplants, cuckoo-flower, garlic mustard, garden honesty and many other cruciferous plants
