The Carrion Crow forms one species with the Hooded Crow and the two forms freely interbreed where their ranges meet, It is found in a wide range of open country including farmland, heath and moorland and upland areas as well as parks, towns and cities, It also occurs on cliffs and sea-coasts, though the Hooded Crow is more frequent in these habitats when in range, It feeds mainly on the ground and takes a wide assortment of insects, plant matter, scraps and refuse, eggs and young of other birds, carrion of all types including road-casualties and dead livestock, It is not a social bird like the Rook, It nests singly and is usually seen in pairs or family parties, Though numbers may associate together when feeding and at roosts,
It nests in trees, usually in the fork of a branch, and on pylons and other man-made structures, ledges, cliffs and, in some places, on the ground in deep heather or other vegetation, The nest is a large structure of sticks, plant stems, kelp fronds at coastal sites, mixed with some earth and moss or heather, The nest is lined with wool or hair and is often decorated with bleached bones. Nests may be used in successive years and become quite substantial, Incubation is by the female alone, with both parents feeding the young,
