Guatemala. Deputy High Commissioner on mission to Central America

In the town of Santa Elena in Guatemala, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Kelly T. Clements visits a repair workshop owned by a Salvadorian refugee who has benefitted from UNHCR's recently-implemented Quick Impact Project (QIP) scheme. ; As thousands flee violent street gangs in Honduras and El Salvador for safety in neighbouring Mexico, UNHCR's Deputy Chief, Kelly T. Clements, visited Guatemala, a transit country on the northern migration route, to demonstrate UNHCR's commitment to supporting those displaced within the region and the country's hosting them. She visited refugee shelters and projects designed to provide employment to help refugees get back on their feet. She met with refugees who have fled their home countries because they were being threatened, blackmailed or forced into criminal activity. Displacement and asylum applications in Central America are growing year on year and UNHCR continues to work to improve financial support, legal aid and housing.
