Another happy shelf stacker.

The last time I went shopping was March 30th. On that day the UK government announced in their daily briefings that there were 22141 confirmed cases and 1408 deaths due to the Covid-19 virus. Today, April 12th 2020, it is 84279 confirmed cases and 10612 deaths.

Walking the one way system of the supermarket, talking to the shelf stackers, I was buoyed by their cheerfulness. On some of their faces one could detect worry but the vast majority had that Sang-froid, a calmness of composure. Perhaps they were good actors, or had good training, but I suspect that it was a pride in restraint of one’s emotions.

Whatever, 10 out of 10 in what must be a very difficult job at the moment, worrying about seemingly endless customers streaming past, some perhaps unthinkingly less than the required minimum two metre distancing.

I hope I can avoid shopping for another 10 or more days and I suspect that this routine may last a couple of years. It is possible that it will be sometime in 2022 before we all get vaccinated against this plague.
