Part of an old gate post.

 

Originally outwith the forest on the open moor there was a deer fence to prevent red deer coming off the hill and browsing on the young trees.

 

Subsequently the new owners realised that a deer fence was a bad idea as Capercaille (Tetrao urogallus) would fly into the fence and be killed.

 

As capercaille are a decling species in Scotland the fence was removed - just leaving the odd strainer or gate post.
