On the climb

After a 2 minutes late departure from Hellifield the train got to this location 8 minutes early. Bullied Battle of Britain Pacific 34067 "Tangmere" heads 1Z59 14:17 Carlisle to Leeds "Settle & Carlisle Steam Special" (Northern Belle) on Whalley arches at the start of the climb to Wilpshire summit.

The longest viaduct in Lancashire, it is unusual for the area in being built of brick. Listed Grade II. 605 m long, consisting of 29 arches of 9 m (30ft) and 20 arches of 12 m (40ft), it took three years to complete at a cost of £40,000. The bricks were made in Whalley from clay taken from Hardle Common.
