palddraw

In a pallidotomy, a small hole is made in the skull- just large enough to pass a thin probe through. This probe carries an electrical current through the tip. It can stimulate, inactivate or destroy the cells it touches. In a pallidotomy, the electrode is passed into the globus pallidus on the opposite side of the patients problem side. While in the operating room, the surgeon can confirm the correct target by using small currents passed through the brain. When the correct spot is confirmed, a stronger current us used to destroy the cells in a small area.
