Durga Bai feeds supplements to her 16 month old daughter Anjali Sehai who is suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) at a Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) in district hospital in Guna in Madhya Pradesh. Despite being rich in natural resources like diamonds, Madhya Pradesh is more infamous for its poverty. It is home to around 50 million people who defecate in the open air without latrines (around 70% of its 72 million people). These people consequently do not have adequate hygiene, without soap and enough water to wash their hands after defecating. About 5% of the global total of open defecators can be found in this one Indian state alone. Madhya Pradesh is also home to some of the most undernourished children in India with 50% of under threeÕs suffering from stunting (chronic malnutrition), an indicator of long-term persistent nutrition deprivation that lead to poor physical growth and brain development in children with tragic implications for child survival, growth and development.
