Members of Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC), Task Force and community discuss of their preparedness to face floods (flood shelter, arrangement of shelter materials, listing of vulnerable families etc.) in the village with UNICEF officials in Supaul, one of the worst flood-affected districts in Bihar Province. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programme, is a part of the over all objective of the Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) program. UNICEF's Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) programme started in 2009 and now covers 255 villages and 155 schools in eight flood-prone districts mostly in northern Bihar. Of 38 districts in the state 28 are flood prone. Earth quakes are also common, five districts being in seismic zone V and 21 in zone IV. The programme, implemented by seven NGO partners, not only empowers schools and communities in identifying risks it also assists them in initiating disaster risk reduction (DRR) measures and linking them to government programmes.
