Strabane Bridges & River Mourne, 3 May 2020, Short - v1

This new footbridge across the River Mourne in Strabane was installed by SH Structures during the summer of 2015. The 92m (302 Ft) span cable stay structure, which sits within a designated Special Area of Conservation, has a 38m (125 Ft) high wishbone mast. At 3.5m (11'-6") wide, the new bridge now creates a much needed link for pedestrian and cyclists between the Melvin Park residential area of Strabane and the town centre. The cable stay design consisting of 26 steel tension cbles was selected to minimise the impact on the north bank (town) and take advantage of the large area available to the south (Ballycolman) where the mast could be assembled and installed. The mast was brought to site in sections and assembled on temporary works before being lifted into place using two large mobile cranes to complete the challenging tandem lift. The completed structure was shortlisted in the 2016 Structural Steel Design Awards.

There were numerous constraints on the site for the bridge which have had to be taken into account in the design. The River Mourne in this area is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and is an important location for salmon spawning. In addition, the location commonly floods and is therefore buffeted on either side by high flood protection structures which had to be taken into account in the design. Invasive species of flora including Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam line the river banks at the site and the town centre location has mean that the bridge foundations will have to be built around utility services.

The £3.2m bridge was funded by the Department for Social Development (DSD)
