Quando se sente ameaçado, o peixe-balão-de-pintas-pretas engole água, de modo a fazer o seu corpo inchar consideravelmente. Desta maneira intimida predadores e torna-se difícil de agarrar. A sua carne é comestível, mas deve ser cuidadosamente preparada por especialistas, uma vez que a pele e vísceras contêm um poderoso veneno - a tetrodotoxina. No Homem, esta pode provocar graves perturbações do sistema nervoso e eventualmente, a morte. Trata-se de um peixe muito comum em recifes de coral.
