Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor)
There are reportedly several groups of these critically endangered birds around Canberra at present. They breed in Tasmania in summer and then migrate to the mainland for the winter. Very attractive small lorikeet sized parrot. They are not easily encountered and migrate through this area going north in Autumn and south in Spring. There were at least 45 in one tree and quite a few more around about. I’ll post more photos in coming days. They are nectivores and were causing quite some consternation among local avian residents, including Noisy Miners and Crimson and Eastern Rosellas, as well as attention from Currawongs. However they didn’t seem to mind the many human watchers about.
