Crested Shrike-tit (Falcunculus frontatus)

The sound of ripping and tearing at bark will signify the presence of the Crested Shrike-tit getting at arthropod prey. This is an arboreal insectivore consisting of 3 widely geographically separated subspecies (apparently they may be elevated to separate species). This one is ssp “frontatus” or Eastern Shrike-tit of the east and southeast of the continent. According to Wikipedia: “a bird endemic to Australia where it inhabits open eucalypt forest and woodland. It is the only species contained within both the subfamily Falcunculinae and the genus Falcunculus”. Seen actively ripping the place up in Diddams Close Park, Belconnen ACT
