‘Unusual’ transmission of blister rust disease through root grafting: Western white pine (Pinus monticola) with white pine blister rust canker at the base of the tree ~11 years after inoculation with Cronartium ribicola, as a two-year old seedling (sow year 2004). Normally the rust infects through needles and then proceeds to the stem, but some survivors of rust testing at Dorena GRC have shown first cankers >10 years after inoculation, and at the base of the tree. Contact richard.sniezko@usda.gov for more information.
