Matela - Terceira Island - The Azores
Matela is part of the Terceira Island Natural Park and is a "Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species". With around 27 hecatres, this protecet area is a small patch of natural vegetation, in the center of Terceira island. It is a relic of the primitive natural forest of medium latitute, consisting of laurel (Laurus azorica), wild cedar (Juniperus brevifolia) and heather (Erica azorica), forming a compact forest with high biological richness of fauna and endemic flora of the Azores.
